The makers of the Kentucky Derby trophy are often asked about the toughest part of the process, be it the “spinning” technique that shapes the gold vase or the precision taken in designing the horse and jockey that sit atop it.

“Easily,” said Susanne Blackinton-Juaire, a fifth-generation silversmith, “it’s having to pack it up and give it away,”

Blackinton-Juaire and her husband, Bill, spent months crafting the Derby 142 trophies as well as three smaller, sterling silver replicas given to the winning owner, trainer and jockey. Each arrived Wednesday to Churchill Downs 24 days out from the first Saturday in May.

With the Kentucky Derby a little more than three weeks away, the 14-karat gold trophy to be presented to the winner’s owner has arrived at Churchill Downs.

The trophy was created by a team that has made it since 1975. Artisans Bill Juaire and Susanne Blackinton-Juaire.

The winner’s trophy arrived at Churchill Downs Tuesday morning.

The trophy was hand delivered by the head of New England Sterling, the Massachusetts-based company that creates the trophy each year.

What is solid gold, is awarded for winning a famous race, is the most coveted and sought-after trophy in horse racing and is understandably priceless? It is the Kentucky Derby trophy.

William Juaire, of New England Copperworks, spun his first piece in the 10^th grade- an aluminum cup in metals class. Little did young Juaire know that when he grew up he would have the prestige of spinning the Kentucky Derby Trophy.  Something he has been making year after year for the last 25 years.

The 14-karat gold trophy was unveiled to members of the media Monday, March 25 in the Directors Room on the fourth floor of the Churchill Downs Clubhouse. It started its journey to the Louisville track after finishing touches were placed on the coveted prize by artisans at New England Sterling of North Attleboro, Mass., which has created each Kentucky Derby winner’s trophy since 1975.
